Sometimes it seems as if it were impossible to keep your skin at bay, especially when you wake up with a big pimple on the nose or a fever or sore at the corner of the mouth. The good news is that there are ways to prevent and treat skin problems more common - here are some tips.

Acne - A pimple starts when the skin pores become clogged with a type of oil called sebum, which lubricates the skin and hair. Acne is common during puberty when hormones go into overdrive, causing the skin to overproduce sebum. Since many of the oil-producing glands are on the forehead, nose and chin, this area - the T-zone - is where blemishes appear.


Here are some tips to prevent acne breakouts and get them to remit as soon as possible: Wash your face twice a day (no more) with warm water hot shooting and a mild soap made for people with acne. Gently massage your face with circular motions. Do not scrub. Overwashing and scrubbing can irritate the skin. After cleaning, the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) recommends applying an over-the-counter lotion containing benzoyl peroxide.

This will decrease the grain. It is tempting, but here's why you should not do so: the pimple can push infected deeper layers of the skin, causing more swelling and redness, and even scarring. If you notice a pimple coming before a big event, like a year-end party, a dermatologist can often treat it with less risk of infecting you or leave you scars.

Avoid touching your face with your fingers or leaning on objects that collect sebum and skin residue like the telephone. Touching your face can spread the bacteria that cause pores to become inflamed and irritated. To keep bacteria at bay, wash your hands before applying anything to your face, such as creams or makeup.

If you wear glasses or sunglasses, be sure to clean them frequently to prevent grease from clogging the pores around the eyes and nose. If you have acne on your body, avoid wearing tight clothing, which do not leave the skin to breathe and can cause irritation. You may want to also avoid scarves, headbands and caps, which tend to collect dirt and oil.

Remove your makeup before bedtime. When buying makeup, look for products whose label or box set that are "non-comedogenic" or "no acnegenic”. Throw away old makeup that smells or looks different from when you bought it.


Protect your skin from the sun. It may seem like a tan masks acne, but it is only temporary. A tan can cause the body to produce more sebum, the acne may worsen rather than improve. The sun also causes skin lesions that, ultimately, encourage the appearance of wrinkles and increase skin cancer risk. If you're worried about acne, talk to a dermatologist.
